Proposal: IRB Members of Local 613 transfer to CEIU Local 645

(note: when “members” are mentioned in this message, it is not referring to the IRB work title of the PM06s.  Rather it is referring to the workers who hold membership in the Local)

CEIU Local 613 has members from two departments: IRB and IRCC.  In the IRB offices that are covered there is another Local (CEIU Local 645) representing the same types of members that 613 covers.  A discussion and signing of a petition is being held to see if all of the IRB members from 613 would be willing to move into CEIU Local 645.

Details on this change:

  • The dues are the same for each Local, so the dues paid by a member would remain the same
  • A percentage of the money in Local 613’s funds would be transferred to 645 to compensate for the transfer of members from one Local to another, so there would be no lessening of the strike fund to transferred members.
  • This would make administrating the Locals easier.  This is a benefit to members because the Executive of each Local is made up of elected volunteers.  Therefore, a Local that is difficult to administrate could find it difficult to find willing volunteers to keep the Local effective.  Plus a larger pool of members to draw volunteers from can make for a stronger Executive.
  • With all IRB unionized employees represented by one Local, confusion over who to contact regarding workplace issues would be reduced.
  • Both Local 613 and 645 representatives meet quarterly with Management reps from IRB (these meetings are called LMCCs).  Solidarity front would be easier to attain if all the members of the offices were represented by one Local than by two.

If you are interested in reading up on the union policy behind this type of restructuring, please take a look at Policy #24 of the CEIU National Policies.  If you have questions or comments, please contact your Local rep or comment on this post.

If you are unable to attend the meeting, you can still sign the petition for or against this proposal.  Since it is a petition, you’d be signing your name to your stance, there is no secret ballot in this instance.  Email ceiu613executive@gmail.com with your stance (I concur with the transfer of my membership to CEIU Local 645/I oppose the transfer) and it will be attached.
